TOKYO – Warner’s “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” looks poised for a strong theatrical run in Japan after topping the box office for the second weekend and running off to a $28.6 million total in nine days.

Playing on 970 screens in the Dec. 3-4 frame, “Beasts” earned $5.9 million from 445,000 admissions, dropping only 18% compared with its first weekend. It already passed the 1 million admissions mark after only five days on release, putting it in fine position for the upcoming peak New Year’s season.

Holding onto the number two slot was Toho’s smash animation “Your Name,” which recorded $2.15 million, pushing its total to $174 million. That makes the film the second highest grossing Japanese title of all time, behind Miyazaki’s 2001 “Spirited Away” with $266 million.

Moving up two notches to number four was Tokyo Theatres’ sleeper hit “In This Corner of the World.” Named as the best Japanese film of 2016 at the recent Yokohama festival, this period animation set in Hiroshima made $594,000 on only 87 screens. More screens are to be added as the film settles in for a long, prosperous run.
