This is why it works! Garrett Hedlund recently told Us Weekly that respect is the key to his relationship with his girlfriend of two years, Kirsten Dunst.

Speaking with Us at the L.A. premiere of "Lullaby" on Tuesday, May 6, the actor said he was bummed to miss Monday night's star-studded Met Gala in NYC, which his girlfriend attended solo. There, Dunst danced the night away with Shailene Woodley and Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy.

The actor will, however, have his lady right beside him while filming "Pan" in England all summer. A source inside the Met Ball told Us, "Kirsten said she's been in London a lot with Garrett while he's filming." Added the insider, "She said she's been playing housewife. She's been cooking and hanging out with him."

(Dunst, as recalled, incited controversy last month after she made controversial gender role comments. "I'm sorry. You need a man to be a man, and a woman to be a woman," she told Harper's Bazaar UK in its May 2014 issue. "That's how relationships work.")

The "Melancholia" star and Hedlund made their first official appearance together as a couple in January 2012. When asked by Us in his most recent interview, what makes his relationship with Dunst work, Hedlund responded, "It just works."

"I think it's respect," he explained.
