Life in Photos: Sylvester Stallone

By Michael Mullen Slide 1 of 13

If the new millennium has taught us anything, it's that '80s action heroes never die: They always come back for a rematch. And another and another and another. In honor of Sylvester Stallone's latest flick, "Bullet to the Head," Wonderwall goes all the way back to the beginning of an unlikely story: an Italian kid who fought his way up from the gritty streets to become a box-office bad-ass.Sylvester the KidMichael Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone was born in New York City in 1946 -- his father was a hairdresser and his mother was a women's wrestling promoter. Doctors used forceps at his birth and partially paralyzed one side of his face, so that trademark drawl so often imitated -- "Adrian!" -- has been with him his whole life. He also suffered from other health problems as a child, including the rickets. His parents divorced in 1957 and he moved with his mother to Philadelphia.
