Scott Derrickson is nearing a deal to direct "Doctor Strange" for Marvel, which is including the first as part of its bold Phase Three plan.

Marvel has been searching for a director to replace Edgar Wright on "Ant-Man" but already made its choice with regard to "Doctor Strange," which follows a former neurosurgeon who protects Earth from magical and mystical threats.

The character was first introduced to Marvel comics readers in 1963, and he has interacted with Spider-Man, Nick Fury and the Fantastic Four over the years. In fact, "Steven Strange" was referenced in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier."

Kevin Feige is producing the film, which will be executive produced by Louis D'Esposito and Stan Lee, among others.

Derrickson is represented by WME and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.
