MGM is reviving the “Stargate” franchise.

The studio announced Wednesday that it has given a greenlight to “Stargate: Origins,” a new series built around Catherine Langford, a character from the original “Stargate SG1” television series. With a 10-episode order, the new series will premiere on digital-video platform Stargate Command.

“Origins” will follow a young Langford as she explores a mystery behind the show’s titular portal. Produced by MGM Digital Group and New Form, “Origins” will be directed by Mercedes Bryce Morgan and written by Mark Ilvedson and Justin Michael Terry.

“We’ve been eager to revisit the ‘Stargate’ franchise, and create an all-new story that honors the founding mythos and gives loyal fans more mystery and adventure,” said Kevin Conroy, president of digital and new platforms at MGM. “We view Stargate Origins as a thank you to fans who have been keeping the spirit of the franchise alive for nearly 25 years. With the increasing popularity of digitally native content that can be streamed to any device, MGM is committed to the production of premium linear mid-form content and are proud to launch with ‘Stargate Origins.’”

“Stargate SG1” aired from 1997 to 2007 and spawned multiple spinoffs. It was based on the 1994 film “Stargate,” starring Kurt Russell.
