Ozzy Osbourne: 'Tony Iommi's cancer did not spark relapse'

6/18/2014

Ozzy Osbourne has cleared up rumours surrounding his drink and drug relapse by dismissing suggestions he was plunged into a downward spiral of depression after his bandmate Tony Iommi was diagnosed with cancer. The Black Sabbath frontman, who spent years battling his addictions, fell off the wagon in 2012 after nearly a decade of sobriety. The relapse came just months after his long-time colleague Iommi found out he was suffering from lymphoma, prompting fans to speculate the stress of the guitarist's health battle took its toll on the singer. However, Osbourne is adamant his relapse was unrelated to his personal problems, including Iommi's cancer, and could have happened at any time. He tells Britain's Event magazine, "(It is) not true. There was no reason except that I'm an alcoholic and one day you just look outside, it's a sunny day and you know nothing is going to come between you and a beer, and then you go right down the mad slide and you're crawling around on the floor wishing you didn't have to watch another sunrise."
