'Rogue One' tops holiday weekend box office with $96.1M

LOS ANGELES (AP) — "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" continues to soar at the box office, adding $96.1 million in ticket sales and beating a spate of new releases to remain No. 1 over the holiday weekend.

The animated animal tale "Sing" won the battle for second place with a $54.9 million debut. Three other new releases, "Passengers," ''Why Him?" and "Assassin's Creed," rounded out the top five.

Ticket sales have already topped $11 billion for the year in the U.S. and Canada, according to comScore.

The top 20 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Monday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Tuesday by comScore:
