Steven Quale to Direct 'Hunter Killer' for Relativity (Exclusive)

By Jeff Sneider

With his upcoming tornado movie "Into the Storm" whipping up a flurry of positive buzz, Steven Quale has been tapped to direct "Hunter Killer" for Relativity.

Neal Moritz and Toby Jaffe are producing for Original Films, while Ryan Kavanaugh will produce for Relativity, whose Tucker Tooley will executive produce.

Antoine Fuqua and Phillip Noyce were previously attached to direct, while screenwriters have included Jamie Moss ("X-Men: First Class"), John Kolvenbach ("Coney Island") and Arne Schmidt ("Chain Reaction").

The film is based on the novel "Firing Point" by George Wallace Cdr. USN Ret. and Don Keith.

"Hunter Killer" follows an untested submarine captain who must work with a Navy SEAL team to rescue the Russian president, who has been taken prisoner during a military coup, in an effort to stop a rogue Russian General from igniting World War III.

Quale is a veteran VFX whiz who worked closely with James Cameron on "The Abyss," "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" and "True Lies," as well as two of the most successful movies ever made in "Titanic" and "Avatar." He made his feature directorial debut with "Final Destination 5" and co-directed the documentary "Aliens of the Deep" with Cameron.

Quale is repped by Resolution, Principato-Young Entertainment and Hansen, Jacobson.
