Tonalist came from nowhere to win the Belmont Stakes and deny heavy favorite California Chrome the first Triple Crown since 1978.

California Chrome was a strong favorite in the Belmont Stakes, going off at 4/5 odds. Wicked Stong had the next-best odds at 5-1. Chrome was the most heavily bet Triple Crown contender in history.

Bob Costas delivered this insane bit of trivia before the race: the last three Triple Crown winners, all in the 1970s, came as New York and Los Angeles teams faced off for national championships in major sports. This year, The New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings are facing off for the Stanley Cup.

More to come….
