Tony Awards Ratings Fall, Stanley Cup Finals Decider Rises, Game Shows Return

UPDATED: After hitting a 15-year ratings high last year, riding Hamilton‘s tidal wave of popularity, the Tony Awards on CBS this year, hosted by Kevin Spacey, drew a modest 4.7 metered market household rating against the deciding game in the Stanley Cup Final. That was down -31% from last year’s 6.8 rating for the Tonys, which also faced the Stanley Cup Finals. The Tonys’ delivery also was below the 2015 show (5.1), which aired opposite the highly rated NBA Finals.

The trend held in the fast nationals, with the Tony Awards averaging 6 million viewers and a 0.9 adults 18-49 Live+same day rating, down -31% and -44%, respectively, from 2016. CBS still won the night in total viewers with a boost from veteran 60 Minutes (7.7 million)

Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals, in which the Pittsburgh Penguins won the title, produced a 4.8 overnight rating, up +28% vs. 2016 clincher on NBC (3.7). It ranks as 4th-best SCF Game 6 on record.

Leading to the Stanley Cup Finals, Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly (0.9 in 18-49, 4.4 million viewers), was up a tenth in the demo from its so-so debut last week and way down in views (-28%). NBC is projected to win the night in adults 18-49.

ABC’s summer Sunday game show lineup launched with Celebrity Family Feud (1.5, 6.9 million) on par, a tenth off the debut of its previous installment last summer. It was followed by another Steve Harvey-hosted game show, Funderdome (1.4, 6.1 million), which held close to Celebrity Feud despite an early online release by hackers. At 10 PM, $100,000 Pyramid (1.2, 5.6 mil) was way down from its premiere last summer, -29% in 18-49, -30% in viewers.

Fox’s American Grit returned to 1.1 mil and a 0.4, -50% down in the demo from its 2016 premiere, which was in-season.
