TV News Roundup: Darius Rucker to Host ‘Reel South’ Season 2, NBC Orders ‘Top Puppet’

In today’s TV news roundup, country artist Darius Rucker signs on as host for the second season of “Reel South,” ratings for E!’s Mariah Carey docuseries, and more.

DATES

WORLD Channel‘s docuseries “Reel South” will return for a second season on Sunday, Jan. 8 at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. The new season welcomes a new host in Grammy-winning recording artist Darius Rucker and features 12 new stories from across the country, celebrating America’s rich tradition of Southern comfort. “Reel South” is a co-production with South Carolina ETV, UNC-TV and the Southern Documentary Fund (SDF), with Rachel Raney and Amy Shumaker serving as executive producers.

SPECIALS

NBC will air reality special “Top Puppet” in the summer of 2017. For the special, in which contestants will compete to be named as America’s next great puppet act, NBC is partnering with Talpa Media, The Jim Henson Company and Universal Television Alternative Studio. Executive producers include Jay Bienstock, Charles Boyd, Phil Cottone, John de Mol, Craig Ferguson, Brian Henson and Vince Raisa.

EXECUTIVES

Kellyn Parker has been hired as vice president, original programming and development, West Coast for Comedy Central. In his new position, Parker will  develop and oversee production on West Coast-based original series. Parker comes from Funny Or Die, where he was vice president of partner content.

RATINGS

E! roadblocked its premiere of Mariah Carey docuseries “Mariah’s World” on Sunday night. Across E! and Bravo, the series premiere drew 1.22 million viewers in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and 2.14 million total viewers after three days of viewing.  The series will continue airing on E! only, though Bravo picked up the lion’s share of the viewership for Sunday’s premiere (1.3 million total viewers, 689,000 in the 18-49 demo.)
