Vice Media Forms Content Partnership With UK’s Guardian Newspaper

Vice Media is teaming with Brit newspaper The Guardian to forge a content partnership that will give Vice access to original investigative news reporting from a unit of Guardian journalists. In turn, the paper will tap into Vice’s video production skills and distribution platform in order to maximize revenue and exposure of its journalism.

The alliance will include co-branded special reports that will air nightly across Vice’s news offerings, including Vice News Tonight, Vice and HBO’s new nightly news series Vice on HBO as well as Vice Specials, the hour-long tent-pole documentary series for HBO.

The two companies will also collaborate on the development of new video formats across genres and platforms – from informational TV shows, to investigative mini-series, specialty mobile-first media products, feature documentaries and virtual reality storytelling.

Working out of Vice’s London newsroom, a team of Guardian reporters, led by multimedia news editor Mustafa Khalili, will work with Vice News producers and development execs to develop original content.

Ahead of the launch, Vice News has hired BBC Newsnight deputy editor Neil Breakwell, who will take on the role of London Bureau Chief and be responsible for expanding the company’s UK operations as well as bring in a number of new hires.

This is an interesting move for the Guardian, which is looking to ramp up its U.S. profile as well as generate more revenue in an industry that has been struggling in the digital age.

“When I was a young man studying political science, my International Politics professor told me to get a Guardian subscription because it was ‘the best news in the world,’” said Vice Media co-founder and CEO Shane Smith in a statement. “I have had one ever since. This partnership provides a test case for the way forward in multi-platform exploitation of content. And when that content is the foremost investigative news in the business, it becomes even more imperative. Real, fact-based trusted news has never been more important and this partnership, I am very excited to say, will provide just that.”

Guardian Media Group CEO David Pemsel added: “Partnering with Vice is testament to our strategy to innovate on a global scale to maximise both the revenue potential and impact of our journalism.”

Vice News Tonight and Vice on HBO will be available to UK and Irish audiences on the Viceland UK channel.
