Slide 1 of 11

The clawed, hot-tempered member of the X-Men has quite a backstory By Myriam Gabriel-Pollock Special to MSN MoviesHugh Jackman will once again take on his mutton-chopped, clawed persona when "The Wolverine" opens July 26. Although Jackman has played Wolverine in five previous "X-Men" films and spin-offs — including the critically sliced-up "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" (2009) — he is still unsure if people really understand the character. "This movie will really get to his core," promises Jackman. "The Wolverine" picks up sometime after "X-Men: The Last Stand" (2006), when Logan/Wolverine has lost both his mentor, Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), and his secret love, Jean Grey (Famke Janssen). He then travels to Japan, summoned by an old acquaintance whose life he saved during World War II. There, Logan struggles with his immortality while going up against some serious foes: an army of ninjas, the Silver Samurai and the slinky but deadly Viper. Adamantium and samurai steel will clash and slash in what is sure to be an action-packed summer blockbuster. Director James Mangold assures fans that they will finally see the depth of Wolverine's intensity and anger, and the character's trademark "berserker rage" as driven by something more primal.
