Will Smith, Mena Massoud Set For ‘Aladdin’, Live-Action ‘Dumbo’ Gets Release Date — D23

There is a long list of news coming out of the live-action presentations at the D23 Expo. At the top of the list is the announcement of Tim Burton’s Dumbo. The live-action adaptation of the 1941 animated classic will open in theaters March 29, 2019. Also making news is the lead for Guy Ritchie’s live-action AladdinAfter weeks of speculation, Disney has tapped relative newcomer Mena Massoud for the titular role and Naomi Scott as Jasmine. And after months of rumors, stepping into the lamp as the Genie is Will Smith.

Also teased in the live-action panel at D23 were their slate of projects that are officially currently in the works including Mulan as well as The Jungle Cruise movie based on the popular Disneyland attraction starring Dwayne Johnson.

Finally, director Jon Favreau was also on hand to share an amazing CG-laden teaser of the forthcoming live-action Lion King starring Donald Glover.

The live-action adaptation of the critically acclaimed film also has James Earl Jones reprising his role as Mufasa from the animated version with Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen as the meerkat and warthog duo Timon and Pumbaa as well as the recently announced  John Oliver  playing the king’s right-hand hornbill Zazu. Despite rumors of Hugh Jackman playing Scar and Beyonce playing Nala, no other casting announcements were made.
