Popocatepetl Volcano Erupts, Spewing Gas and Ash Into Sky

Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano erupted on June 17, spewing gas and ash into the air, officials said. The eruption sent a plume of volcanic material a distance two or three miles into the sky, according to Mexico’s National Center for Prevention of Disasters. The agency was monitoring Popocatepetl for several days and recorded “185 exhalations,” according to the agency’s report. The agency issued a “Volcanic Traffic Light Yellow Phase 2 alert” and urged residents to be cautious and avoid the area. Credit: National Coordination of Civil Protection via Storyful
