Protesters Rally in Senate Office Building to Demand Congress Defund ICE and CBP

Protesters filled the Russell Senate Office Building rotunda in Washington on June 25 to demand Congress defund Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) following controversies involving the agencies. Demonstrators chanted in English and Spanish and held signs reading, “Defund Hate,” video shows. In recent days, the Trump administration announced and then delayed plans for ICE to conduct raids throughout the country aimed at deporting undocumented immigrants currently in the United States. The government also argued before the Ninth Circuit that it did not violate a provision in the Flores Agreement that requires detained children be held in “safe and sanitary conditions,” after the children were not provided with soap and blankets. Both have served as flash points in a long-simmering national debate about immigration and border security and prompted calls for Congress to defund ICE and CBP. Credit: Joann Bautista via Storyful
