This hungry horse has no time for watermelon

Blaze is a very friendly horse who lives on a beautiful farm near Millbrook, Ontario. His pasture runs alongside a quiet country road where people often walk or cycle past. Blaze comes out to greet people as they pass and he enjoys a scratch behind the ear and an occasional treat. Dave and Chris have visited with Blaze many times and they can't resist those big brown eyes and gorgeous face. They always bring him something delicious, like carrots or apples. But Chris and Dave decided that they should offer Blaze some different foods to sample so they could see what appeals to his palate. On this walk, they came prepared lettuce, strawberries and watermelon. Knowing that watermelon and strawberries are sweet and delicious, it only made sense that Blaze should be allowed to discover if these were his new favorites. Blaze turned up his nose indignantly at the watermelon, even though it had a tempting chunk of carrot on top. He tried the strawberry, but promptly spit it out. Knowing that horses are like children and that they often refuse something new even if it is tasty, Chris and Dave kept trying. They went to Chestnut, the horse in the neighboring paddock, but Blaze merely watched curiously. Chestnut couldn't be tempted and it didn't convince Blaze to eat either on the second try. Blaze did have a hankering for the head of Romaine lettuce though, and he gobbled up the whole thing greedily. It was gone in a few seconds. With the obvious verdict that the new treats were not his new favorites, Blaze was given one of his regular treats, fresh grass and clover from the patch just out of reach on the other side of the fence. With the treats all gone and the visit at an end, Blaze gave Chris a great, big horse smooth on the side of the head. Who can resist a horse like Blaze?
