Labor Candidate Defends Use of Cancer Patient's Story to Promote Cancer Policy

Chris Gambian, Labor’s candidate in the Banks electorate, released a video on Wednesday, April 23, in which he defended the use of a cancer patient’s story to promote Labor’s cancer policy. “The last few days you may have received a letter in the mailbox from Andrew who is telling his family’s story about the impact of his dad’s cancer,” says Gambian in the video. He says Andrew and his father “are very much real people” and that Andrew declined an offer to appear in the video for fear of generating backlash. Gambian says the letter “caused quite a furore” on social media; however, Storyful searched across social media for a number of terms that could be associated with the letter, and found few comments regarding it. Three comments critical of the letter are included below. The letter was delivered by supporters of Gambian, with a Labor activist sharing photos on Twitter of her and a colleague holding copies of the letter. Credit: Chris Gambian via Storyful
