Activists Fight Against Fracked Gas in Low-Income, Black and Brown Community

The North Brooklyn Pipeline is a 7-mile pipeline under construction by National Grid. It's projected to bring fracked gas from Pennsylvania to New York, running through public housing, low-income, and predominantly Black and brown communities. Neighborhoods like Bushwick already have some of the city's highest rates of asthma. Activists argue that the pipeline will do more environmental damage while increasing their utility costs. Research shows that poor and minority communities are disproportionately exposed to higher levels of environmental hazards due in part to discriminatory housing policies. Activists have collected 12,000 signatures, urging Mayor Bill de Blasio to pull permits on the pipeline and invest in renewable energy.
