Driver barely escapes disaster as truck smashes through highway divide

A young motorist narrowly escaped a horrendous collision when a truck smashed through the barrier between the northbound and southbound lanes of a motorway near Newbury, England, on August 1. Bethany Pearson, aged 19, was on her way home from work when the incident occurred. Her car’s dashcam showed just how close she came to being hit. “A few seconds later, definitely would’ve hit me,” she tweeted alongside the dramatic video. The footage shows the truck swing across the northbound lane of the A34, and across into the southbound lane, as Pearson gasps in shock. “An articulated lorry coming the other way veered across the road and crashed through the central reservation barrier, narrowly missing me and showering my car with debris,” she told Storyful. The incident happened at 8:22 pm local time. Highways England reported 20 minutes later that a lorry had “crossed over the northbound carriageway” and was blocking both southbound lanes of the A34. Pearson credited some driving instruction she’d recently had as being key to her keeping control of her car. “I’m just thankful that I did a skid pan driving experience two weeks ago at Thruxton circuit,” she told Storyful. “I think it really helped me to keep control of the car and I’d recommend the course to anyone.” Credit: Bethany Pearson via Storyful
