Windsurfer and Surfer Wiped Out by Enormous Swell off Hawaii

Some water sport enthusiasts ignored official warnings and entered the ocean as large swells hit the coast of Maui, Hawaii, on Saturday, January 16. Photographer Matthew Catalano said he recorded this video of a surfer Rafael Kroeff and a windsurfer Adam Warchol getting wiped out by the massive wave known as “Jaws.” Catalano told Storyful that both Kroeff and Warchol “are alive and doing well thanks to a huge safety crew standing by the popular spot.” The National Weather Service extended a high surf warning until Tuesday for the north and west shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Molokai, and the north shores of Maui, saying dangerous currents would make entering the water “very hazardous.” Credit: Matthew Catalano via Storyful
