Beaches shut down after 3,500 people get stung by jellyfish

Some of the beaches along Australia's northeast coast have been shut down at the height of summer vacation after 3,500 people were stung by bluebottle jellyfish, according to a local beach rescue group. Strong easterly winds are driving the jellyfish toward the coast, Surf Life Saving Queensland officials said. Also known as the Indo-Pacific Portuguese man o'war, the jellyfish produce painful stings and are expected to hang around the beaches for the next week, officials said.
