Newborn Baby Rescued From Underground Storm Drain in Durban

Emergency workers rescued a baby girl who got stuck in a storm drain in a suburb of Durban, South Africa, on the morning of February 11. Rescue Care, which took part in the rescue, told Storyful passers-by alerted emergency services after they heard the cries of the infant, who was lodged a few metres into the storm drain. The area around the concrete drain was dug up before the drain was broken with a hammer and chisel. The baby was recovered and flown to a hospital in Durban where she was reportedly treated for mild hypothermia. Rescue Care said the circumstances leading to the baby ending up in the drain were still unknown. Police were investigating the matter, South African media reported.
