Austrian village sparks controlled avalanche with dynamite to clear snow

After a heavy snowfall in Baad, Kleinwalsteral, Austria, a local committee decided to clear the snow and organized for dynamite to be thrown from a helicopter to spark a controlled avalanche. Sanne de Jong told Storyful that she filmed the event on January 11 from the KWT Lodge, where guests were trapped due to road closures from bad weather. Speaking to Storyful, de Jong said: “The road to Baad got closed on Wednesday at 11:30 am, because there is a critical part on the road from Mittelberg to Baad. Nobody could get into the village or out after that time. They could not drop the dynamite earlier than January 11 because of the bad weather. But today we had clear blue skies, so the helicopter could fly out.” “They dropped some dynamite on the mountain called Bärenkopf. After that they cleared the road and our guests could drive home and we are able to receive our new guest,” she added. Credit: Sanne de Jong via Storyful
