Sirens Sound in Niigata as Tsunami Warning Issued

Warning sirens went off in the northwestern Japanese city of Niigata on June 18 shortly after an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of at least 6.7 hit off the coast of nearby Yamagata Prefecture, according to The Mainichi. The quake hit at about 10.22 pm, causing the Japan Meteorological Agency to send out a tsunami warning for coastal areas in Niigata Prefecture, Yamagata Prefecture, Sado Island and Ishikawa Prefecture’s Noto region, The Asashi Shimbun reported.
