Denver is about 13 inches shy of normal snowfall for the year, but an upcoming snow event will help to bring numbers closer to average.

"As a disturbance moves eastward Thursday night and Friday, snow will begin to develop in parts of Colorado," AccuWeather Meteorologist Ryan Adamson said. "This will be a quite a change from the mostly sunny and mild weather that will be seen during the day on Thursday, especially in eastern Colorado."

Despite an average high temperature of 44 degrees Fahrenheit, temperatures have been soaring to at least 50 F and often to near 60 F each day since Jan. 3. On Thursday, temperatures are again expected to reach towards the 60-degree mark.

Because of this, any snow that falls on Thursday night will have trouble sticking to the warm roads and sidewalks. However, this also means that "as the roads cool, a layer of ice could form under any snow that accumulates," Adamson warned.

This slippery setup will be largely confined to areas west of Denver on Thursday night, so airport delays due to weather are unlikely until snow starts downtown and in areas east of the city on Friday morning.

Snowfall is expected to continue throughout the day on Friday and into Friday night, with a general few inches of snow expected. In higher elevations to the west, much higher accumulations are possible.

Mountain resorts such as Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge and Aspen could all receive double-digit accumulation totals by Saturday morning, sending snowbirds into the Rockies for a weekend of skiing.

Travel into the mountains could be slowed by road closures and vehicle restrictions, so be sure to check your route before heading out.
