Smoke rises from Popocatepetl volcano as alert issued

Smoke billowed from the Popocatepetl volcano in Puebla, Mexico, on February 16, as the government warned people not to approach the volcano due to the risk of falling fragments. The National Center for Disaster Prevention (CENAPRED) was monitoring the volcano and observed a smoke column at least 1.5 miles high, as well as incandescent fragments falling near the sides of the volcano, the government of the State of Morelos said.
