Smoke Turns Sky Orange as Fires Burn Across Northern New South Wales

Plumes of smoke turned the sky orange in northern New South Wales as bushfires burned in tinderbox conditions across much of the region on November 8. Emergency warnings were in place for 12 blazes early on Friday afternoon, while several more out-of-control fires were also burning. The fires included one covering more than 27,000 hectares at Torrington, west of the inland town of Tenterfield. In this video, taken near the blaze, smoke can be seen spreading across the horizon as the orange sunlight lends a Martian hue to the landscape. Yesterday, fires came close to homes in the coastal town of Forster, forcing residents to evacuate the area, according to reports. Credit: Boucher & Co via Storyful
