© India Today Peepli Live co-director Mahmood Farooqui has been acquitted of rape by the Delhi High Court. The court overturned the judgment of a trial court, which had held Farooqui guilty of raping an American woman in 2015 and had sentenced him to jail for seven years.

Farooqui's lawyers had denied the charges and claimed that Farooqui and the woman were in a relationship since 2015, citing the messages exchanged between the two as proof. "In a relationship when people are attracted to each other, things do happen. But it does not mean it's rape," he had said.

The woman, a research scholar from Columbia University, had alleged that Farooqui raped her in a drunken state at his Sukhdev Vihar house in South Delhi on March 28, 2015.
