The Devil Wears Prada is one of the most iconic films of the last decade (or ever), largely due to Anne Hathaway’s portrayal of everywoman Andy Sachs, and Meryl Streep’s performance as brilliantly nasty ice-queen Miranda Priestly. Streep’s version of the cold and exacting Editor in Chief changed the game for what a movie villain could be.

However, in this recently unearthed deleted scene from the movie, that character could have gone an entirely different way.

To set the scene, Andy and Emily are at an event and tasked with announcing the names of guests into Miranda’s ear. It’s a joke scene and it ends with Andy besting Emily when Emily can’t remember the names of two guests approaching their boss. The scene cuts there, and that’s it. Or is it?

See below how the scene could have continued.

We have so many feelings about this moment. For starters, now we have a better understanding of why Miranda is the way she is, what she comes home to every night, and how she has to maintain an image in her career. Honestly, this kind of character depth would work on a television series where you have months and years to know a person and peel the onion back on their personality. But on the other hand, Miranda is THE VILLAIN! Can you imagine The Wicked Witch of the West getting caught without her green face paint and bashfully closing the bathroom door while whispering “Thank you” to Dorothy, and then Dorothy is like, “Maybe she’s not so bad after all? Welps, still gonna kill her!” Nope, wouldn’t work.

Most of the internet seems to be in agreement that this scene a) changes everything and b) is not a change we are here for.

Good work editors of The Devil Wears Prada, we like our Miranda Priestly devilish and cold as ice!
