The report was based on information regarding raw milk purchases, provided by Milk SA, which found raw milk in 2017 was 3.02 percent higher in 2016, mainly due to the higher production in the last six months of 2017.

The estimated total mass of raw milk purchased in January to October 2018, was higher than the same months of 2015, 2016 and 2017.

“Most years in which the increase in production of raw milk was high, was followed by a year with less increase or, in the case of two years, even a decrease in production.

The production of raw milk in two of the last "10 years, namely 2009 and 2016, was lower than in the previous years,” the data showed.

In the three years from 2014 to 2017, the production of raw milk increased with 9.08 percent, or compound annual growth rate of 2.94 percent, which was lower than the increase of 9.64 percent in the previous three years.

The mass purchased per day in January to July 2016 was lower than in the same months of 2015.

The mass purchased in August to December 2016 was higher than in the same months in 2015.

“The mass purchased per day in January to December 2017, with the exception of the mass purchased per day in June 2017, was higher than in the same months of 2016; and the estimated mass purchased per day in January to October 2018, was higher than in the same months of 2017,” Sampro said.
