Microsoft has proven its commitment to development in the African tech industry by announcing that it will soon be delivering its cloud services from datacenters in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

The company says that the project, which will go online sometime next year, is an opportunity for digital transformation on the African continent.

“Currently many companies in Africa rely on cloud services delivered from outside of the continent,” it says. “Microsoft’s new investment will provide highly available, scalable, and secure cloud services across Africa with the option of data residency in South Africa.”

The datacentres will host several Microsoft services, including Office 365, Dynamics 365 and Microsoft Azure – three platforms already widely-used in Africa.

The company’s executive vice-president for its Cloud and Enterprise Group, Scott Guthrie, believes that this development will help with African app-building, business transformation, and will create new economic opportunities.

Microsoft says that with this new addition, it will be the world’s most widespread cloud service provider, spanning 40 different regions.
