The National Union of Mineworkers has confirmed its members are among the group who've been underground since Tuesday.

Details are sketchy but it’s understood miners are demanding that their employer addresses issues around long service awards.

NUM Spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu says they’re extremely worried about the health and safety of their members.

“The leadership of the NUM in KwaZulu Natal went underground today but our members and other workers don’t want to listen to anything unless the employer addressed that issue that they are demanding.”
