PRETORIA - Transport Minister Joe Maswanganyi will announce the preliminary Easter long-weekend road crash statistics in Pretoria on Friday.

Maswanganyi will provide an overview of the law-enforcement operations undertaken over the Easter period.

He will also reveal the statistics for crashes and fatalities over the four-day weekend.

On Tuesday, traffic authorities were fearful that this year's death toll would be higher than last year's.

An accident in KwaZulu-Natal in which 15 people died in a bus crash, and another in the Western Cape where eight died on the N7, pushed the number up substantially.

Police say they noticed an upswing in unlicensed drivers this Easter, and speeding remained a big problem.

Hundreds of people were arrested for various traffic offences.

Last year, more than 330 people died over the Easter weekend.
