Photos: Jacob Blake protests
On Aug. 23, 2020, a 29-year-old Black man named Jacob Blake was shot multiple times in the back by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, U.S., while he was opening the door of his car. The police said that they were responding to a domestic incident. A video that captured the shooting, and has since become viral, showed Blake open the door of his car and lean in, where his three children were seated, when an officer shot him from behind.
According to Blake's lawyers, at least one of the bullets went through his spinal cord, resulting in paralysis, and doctors are unsure if he could ever use his legs again. He also suffered damages to his stomach, arm, kidney and liver. In a statement, Blake's father, Jacob Blake, Sr., said, "They shot my son seven times, seven times, like he didn't matter. But my son matters. He's a human being and he matters." The violent shooting comes at a time when there is already widespread agitation against the treatment of African Americans by U.S. law officials and racism in society. Here is a look at the ongoing protests in pictures.
