“We are the cup holders and we would be the first team to have defended the title,” Baxter told Sowetan.

United won the cup for the second time in four years under the Nedbank sponsorship, when they came from behind to see off Orlando Pirates in a thrilling final in Polokwane last year.

After losing the Telkom Knockout earlier this season to Cape Town City, Baxter is hell-bent to leave on a high note.

“It’s important to win things. We have had a very good season but to make it a great season, you have to win something,” Baxter said.

“In that respect as professionals it’s important because we would set a record by being the first team to retain it,” Baxter added.

They will meet Chippa United in the semi-finals on Saturday, who thumped them 3-0 in midweek through a Lerato Manzini hat-trick.

They rested a few key players in midweek for the semi-final clash, such as Thuso Phala and Onismor Bhasera while midfield kingpin Reneilwe Letsholonyane should be back from suspension.

“When you are in the modern game and you have important games you want to try and rotate the squad under control.

“But it doesn’t always work because I had a player who tried to get a yellow card but he got a red card and I had a player who was trying to get a yellow card but he couldn’t because the referee was very kind to him,” Baxter said.

The Bafana Bafana coach, who will vacate his post with United at the end of the season, raised concerns regarding the Sisa Dukashe pitch they will be playing on.

“It’s not the best pitch we are going to get that day, so we will take that into account, but I don’t think we should be scared of it,” Baxter said.
