Student protesters clash with security at Wits

Students staged a strike at Johannesburg’s Wits University on February 5 and clashed with security, as seen in these videos uploaded to Twitter. The Students Representative Council (SRC) said the university’s management hired “private security” to break up the protest. The protests were prompted by financial issues and sparse accommodation, according to reports from Okay Africa and The South African. A tweet on the SRC account said a hunger strike was planned by members on February 5. Students have been protesting after the university blocked an arrangement that would allow students owing less than R100,000 (about $7,500) to register and attend class. As well as what they called “financial exclusion,” the students said hundreds of students had no accommodation. Credit: Shaazia Ebrahim via Storyful
