Ancelotti: "Without Bale and with CR7 at 50%, it isn't easy"

AS AS 24/04/2014 Carmen Colino

“I’m happy with everything, with the result and with the commitment of the players, because it was a difficult match,” Carlo Ancelotti said after Real Madrid’s win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final first leg at the Bernabéu. “We played well and when the going got tough, we dealt with it well.”

Match: “We started out a bit cautiously and we had difficulties. In the second half, we had more control over the play. It's true that we defended, but we counter-attacked very well.”

Team work: “It was crucial to work together. [Fabio] Coentrao was helped by Isco and [Dani] Carvajal by [Ángel] Di María. In a semi-final, you need that.”

Formation: “We felt more comfortable defending with a 4-4-2 against teams who have so much possession. Without the ball, it’s better to defend that way and we did it well. Without [Gareth] Bale and with Cristiano [Ronaldo] at 50%, it isn’t easy to do as well as we did. Cristiano was sure about playing and he did well.”

Return leg: “The match over there will be very difficult and we have to put in the desire and confidence that we showed today. You never know what can happen. I’m confident.”
