Away from the Bernabéu is hell for Madrid

After drawing at the La Rosaleda stadium, it is clear that Real Madrid have two different faces. One of them is all smiles, when they play at home in the Santiago Bernabéu, but the other is well different when they play away in La Liga. Since Zinedine Zidane has been in charge, their balloon has always been blown up at home, only to burst away.

Real Madrid have played four games at the Santiago Bernabéu under Zidane, and all of them have ended as high-scoring victories. Twelve points to play four, and twelve earned, some moments of excellent play and a great many goals. The first visitors to feel the apparent improvement in the flesh were Deportivo, who took a 5-0 thumping. Sporting de Gijón managed only very slightly better, conceding a handful too, but at least managing a consolation goal in their 5-1 defeat. The third side to visit were also unable to deal with the angst of Cristiano Ronaldo and company and got a true shellacking. The final score was Real Madrid 6, Espanyol 0. On paper, the toughest team to come to Chamartín to really test Madrid were Athletic Club who, despite giving their hosts a lot of problems, also ended up going home empty-handed after a 4-2 defeat. At the Bernabéu with Zidane in the dugout, the stats are indisputable: four games played, 20 goals scored, three conceded and 12 points earned.

Away from the Santiago Bernabéu it is another story entirely. Not counting the Champions League Round of 16 game at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, where Real Madrid won 2-0, the Blancos have played three times against opponents who were, theoretically, weaker, but have not been able to bring home the nine points at stake. Apart from having little firepower, the play has not been good. In Granada they earned all three points in the final minutes and then only thanks to a wonder strike by Modric. In Sevilla, against Betis, they scraped a draw but gave a very poor image of themselves. On their latest excursion, to Málaga, they got another 1-1 draw, allowing another two valuable points to slip through their fingers and basically handing the title to Barcelona on a plate. Real Madrid's away games show a balance of five points earned from a possible nine, with four goals scored and three against. The stats do not lie, and the two faces that this Real Madrid show in the domestic competition are there for all to see.
