Bale recalls, “The goal of my life”

AS AS 18/04/2014 Alvaro de la Rosa

You were the star of the final after that sensational goal you scored. How were you able to make such an explosive run at that stage of the match?

I scored a similar goal for Wales not so long ago. I had to cross the by-line and run partly off the pitch to get past Bartra and I was able to do so. Luckily, that move ended in the back of the net. I had to literally go all the way around him but all I was focused on was the ball. He wanted to block me from getting to it – but he couldn’t. I didn’t look back to see if he was chasing me. The only thing on my mind was the ball.

It was the deciding goal which gave you your first winners’ medal with Real Madrid...

It just feels incredible. It’s my first trophy with Madrid and I hope there are many more to come. It was fantastic to score that goal, winning the match and lift the Cup. I’m really happy but I think we can achieve even more this season.

How was the final for you? Madrid had the game under control until Bartra equalised, and that seemed to revitalise Barça...

We showed our character to bounce back after they levelled, Bartra’s goal came as an unexpected blow to us really.

Barely a minute before Barça’s equaliser, Madrid had the ball in the back of the net but the goal was disallowed for a foul on Pinto. Do think the ref made the wrong call there?

To be honest, I’m not really sure. I haven’t seen the replay but it’s history now, it doesn’t matter.

Would you say that was the most important goal of your career so far?

Yes, it probably was.

What was going through your mind when the ball went in?

I wasn’t really thinking about anything. I am trying to celebrate it now, enjoy the moment and I hope that in the years to come, I can look back and really understand what a great moment it was.

What does winning this Copa del Rey mean to you?

I’ve always followed Real Madrid and the reason I came here was to win trophies. It makes me feel very happy.

Next up are Bayern Munich in the Champions League, this triumph will boost confidence ahead of that game?

The important thing is to make sure we keep our feet on the ground. Bayern are a great side. We have to take each game as it comes.

Your performance last night will surely silence your critics?

I am not really too bothered about what other people say. It’s important for me to concentrate on my game and put myself under the least pressure possible. I was happy with my performance last night.

Cristiano came over to give you a hug after the game. What did he say to you?

Cristiano congratulated me, he was very happy. He played in all of the ties leading up to the final. The victory was a huge team effort. All of us worked very hard and we deserved to win. We had a very good Cup campaign and that was down to a lot of hard work.

I bet the fans really enjoyed watching the team beat Barça at Mestalla?

This victory is for them, the fans for all the support they have given us. The atmosphere was fantastic. The team played well, it was a perfect night.
