FC Barcelona announced on Friday afternoon that they have reached an agreement with Leo Messi to upgrade his contractual arrangement with the club. The short, four-line statement did not go into any specific details about the new terms but it is believed that the deal involves a substantial pay rise while the number of years to run on the exiting contract and buy-out fee will remain unchanged.

The club’s statement reads:

“FC Barcelona has reached an agreement to adjust the terms in the contract binding Leo Messi to the club as a professional first team player. The revised and updated contract will be signed over the next few days”.

On the club’s official web page, Barça also alluded to the 21 trophies Messi has won with the Blaugranas over the past nine seasons.

“These record-breaking stats all helped to lead FC Barcelona to the most successful period in its history. Since he made his debut in 2004/05, Messi has won 21 major titles: 6 Ligas, 3 Champions Leagues, 2 Spanish Cups, 2 Clubs World Cups, 2 European Supercups and 6 Spanish Supercups. And on an individual level he has won four Ballons d’Or, and three Golden Boots and has been top scorer in La Liga three times.

His goals in the Champions League, at the Santiago Bernabéu and most especially at the Camp Nou are memories that Barça fans will cherish forever. And the wonderful thing about it is that there are still many more years of Leo Messi to come!”
