Words and deeds are often different things. Rafa Benítez, by means of the open letter published on his web page, bade farewell to the club he has loved all his life in a gentlemanly manner. But the deeds are a different thing entirely. With enormous disappointment, the recently-dismissed manager went to the home he has in the Wirral, close to Liverpool, without saying goodbye in person to Florentino Pérez, José Ángel Sánchez or the players with whom he has shared the last seven months of his working life. According to Marca, Rafa Benítez was not expecting to get the sack. He understood, too late, and after having got burned in public, that there was no campaign against him, but that the stories that appeared in the press were filtered from within the club itself and from some of the players. He wanted to believe his now former boss when he confirmed him in the post as many as three times. What hurts him most is the way in which he was replaced in the dugout, and the way he found out. He thought he was going to be able to handle Ancelotti's long shadow, but lost the dressing room, from where there has not been a single message to wish him well. It was there that Florentino Pérez found a pretext to get rid of Benítez and replace him.

According to 'El Confidencial', however, Benítez began to suspect what was up when he found out that the president had been sounding out the heavyweights of the squad to see how they viewed the return of Zidane to the Blanco dressing room, as manager. He confessed in his intimate circles that "what's going on at this club is unbelievable." 'Grandad' Florentino, as the players nickname the president, according to this same source, already had his thumb pointing downwards.
