Rafa Benítez is now history at Real Madrid. According to the sports daily Marca, Florentino Pérez has decided to get rid of the manager and his sacking will be announced officially later this afternoon in a press conference, once the board meeting has finished.

The coach has failed to pass the test. After the defeat away at Villarreal, it was leaked from the club that Rafa Benítez had three games to sort things out and get his players to give a better image of themselves on the field. The matches against Rayo Vallecano, Real Sociedad and Valencia have left a balance of seven points, some spells of good play, others in which the team looked nervous, several goals conceded and a cacophony of whistles ringing in the manager's ears.

With this 'report' on the table before him, Florentino Pérez was obliged to take a decision. The team are once again trailing Atlético by four points and Barcelona could stretch their advantage to five if they win their game in hand, an away fixture at Sporting. Madrid are third in the table and in no way give the impression that the distance that separates the coach and the players, one of the main sticking points of this project, has been narrowed.

Real Madrid's situation was not good, with the team having dropped 17 points so far in the league and now is maybe the right time to make changes because the calendar over the next few weeks is benevolent, with several fixtures at the Santiago Bernabéu. The solution will be Zinedine Zidane, who is currently in charge of Real Madrid Castilla. This weekend, the French coach earned a draw at La Roda, and on the way back to Madrid he heard that Benítez had failed to pick up all three points at the Mestalla.

Before the president's ultimatum, the thumb was already pointing downwards, now it seems the threat has been carried out.
