Rafa Benítez will take advantage of the visitor being Malmö to make rotations in his squad, although with the clear aim of winning the game. Real Madrid, already through to the Round of 16 in the Champions League as group leaders, have nothing more at stake than the money prize that comes with the points. Their manager, however, believes that the game can serve to boost team morale. "We have to aim to win and perform well. That will keep our confidence up and will be positive ahead of our next game in La Liga" he said in a press conference.

That next game, a visit to Villarreal next Sunday in La Liga matchday number 15, was in the air during the press conference without anybody asking directly, as Benítez made it clear that he is planning the week's fixtures as a whole rather than separately. "It is a day to rotate, always with the aim of winning. We want to manage both things at the same time and reach the Villarreal in the best shape possible" he explained. "The foundations have been set for us to continue growing and we've had important players unavailable who are now making their way back to fitness."

Although he will give some playing time to players who have figured less so far, the only academy player who has been called up is Llorente. Neither Mayoral nor Odegaard are in the squad. "It's not very likely that the academy players will have a chance to play tomorrow because we need those returning from injuries to get back into the swing of things and recover match fitness." Benítez was asked if Cheryshev, who was on the receiving end of some booing at the Bernabéu during the Getafe game when his name was read out over the public address system will get a chance, Benítez said: "I'm not going to say whether or not he'll play. People don't need to think about what the reasons behind him being left out might be. Instead they should focus on the quality players we have in the squad."

Another name that came up in the press conference was that of Lucas Vázquez, possibly the player who is most deserving of more playing time than had been planned: "There is a group of players who are working so well that it's not necessary to send out messages to them. He's one of them, he trains well all the time, takes care of himself, listens to you and as a result he's always improving."
