Betis relegated to the Segunda before even playing

Getafe’s win over Málaga saw them move 15 points ahead of Betis, with just four games left to play. And with that went the last hope the side from Seville had of staying up in the first division. The Betis fans were finally forced to accept their fate at the end of a season in which they’d fought on in Europe while falling to pieces domestically.

Betis are officially relegated Betis are officially relegated

Betis last went down to the Segunda in 2008/20009 and after two seasons in the second tier they came back to the top flight for the 2011/2012 season. Last season they finished seventh, enough to get them Europa League football, which they took to the quarter final satge, being knocked out by Sevilla on penalties. In the Liga they have lost 22 times, had seven draws and just five wins in a season to forget.

They have had three coaches: Pepe Mel, Juan Carlos Garrido and Gabriel Calderón, their current coach. Without doubt this is a sign of their instability over the last year; an instability that reflects the problems with the club’s management. Miguel Guillén’s resignation as president with Manuel Dominguez Platas taking over hasn’t been enough to settle a club where the majority shareholding is in the hands of an administrative court, with the club in insolvency.
