Diego Costa returns believing he will be fit to play in Lisbon

AS AS 22/05/2014 Dani Hidalgo

Diego Costa arrived back from Belgrade full of optimism. Both the Atleti player and the specialist who treated him, Marijana Kovacevic, believe he has a good chance of being fit to play in the Champions League final on Saturday. Costa, accompanied by Atleti physio Óscar Pitillas, had a consultation with the doctor, including lunch, during which she explained the treatment to the player and, above all, if she thought he had a chance of playing in the final.

Kovacevic’s position was clear: in other similar cases she’s accelerated the recovery process by four or five times. She also said that in her opinion Diego Costa’s situation was not particularly problematic compared to many she had seen. This conversation changed Diego Costa’s mood, which only improved after the treatment itself. Despite winning the league the Brazilian born striker had been extremely down because of his personal situation since coming off at the Camp Nou in the final match of the season. Kovacevic convinced him that her methods can work.

The specialist calmed the player’s worries about missing out on Brazil, and also gave him hope that he may be fit for Saturday, though he does remain cautious.

Controversial treatment

Marijana Kovacevic has become famous for her treatments that aim to treat damaged muscle in extremely short periods of time. Her technique is always the same, applying a gel, whose primary component is horse placenta, to the injured zone . After this she massages the area and then applies electro-stimulation. She claims that one hour of her treatment is equivalent to seven hours of conventional treatment. For injuries such as the one Diego Costa is suffering from she reckons with a maximum time of seven days and that after the treatment the player can return fully fit. While her treatments have fans there are many in the medical community who treat her methods with suspicion. Despite the scepticism she has successfully treated players like Van Persie and Lampard. News of those successes reached Diego Costa who decided to try her placenta-based treatments in a last-gasp bid to play in Lisbon.
