The Brazil manager, Dunga, acknowledged that Marcelo's recent absences from the 'Seleção' are not down to sporting reasons: "He cannot do whatever he wants just because he is a good player. He should be careful what he says", the coach explained in an interview he gave to Sport TV. "There are players who are going off the right track because they are responsible for news stories that are not true. Apart from any technical questions, players have to be committed and conduct themselves properly." Dunga was alluding to the defeat 2-0 Brazil suffered at the hands of Chile last October, when the Real Madrid right-back said that the team "left a lot to be desired". "You only have to see what happened then to understand everything", Dunga added.

A month ago, Dunga already explained why he had stopped calling Marcelo up. The full-back regretted having been left out after remembering a conversation he had had with the head of the medical services of the CBF (Brazilian Football Federation), Gilmar Rinaldi. The Real Madrid manager, Zinedine Zidane, said at the time that "nobody from the CBF has been in contact with us about Marcelo”. Dunga's version, and that of the CBF, however, were very different.
