Filipe Luis put in a faultless performance in last week’s Champions League semi-final at Stamford Bridge; but the Atlético full-back had another source of inspiration, motivating him to secure a place in this month’s final. He knew that his granddad, his number one fan, had fallen ill and would be watching the match from his hospital bed. Ivo Stinghen, Filipe’s grandfather was admitted to the São José hospital in Jaraguá do Sul on Wednesday. The 73-year-old, who had planned to watch the Champions League semi-final decider between Chelsea at home, told doctors that he would only agree to be admitted on the condition that the hospital provided a bedside television so that he could watch his grandson in action.

“I’ve never missed a single game that my grandson has played,” Ivo explained from his hospital bed this week. “I got a shock when Chelsea went in front but now, Filipe will play in the big final”.

After the game, Filipe had emotional words for his grandfather: “He is an example for me. He has a huge heart and when I heard that he had been taken ill, it gave me an extra impetus to bring him some happiness. I hope he gets well soon so that when I see him in the summer, we can laugh together and play a few games of dominoes like we always do”.
