The Golden Show, awarded to the top goalscorer in European league competition, is turning out to be a tighter and more passionate race than ever this season. The number and quality of the contenders for the trophy is quite impressive. Cristiano Ronaldo (2007-08, 2010-11, 2013-14 and 2014-15) and Leo Messi (2009-10, 2011-12 and 2012-13) have won it in recent seasons, with two exceptions, both of them Uruguayan: Diego Forlán (in 2008-09) and Luis Suárez, who shared the prize with the Portuguese marksman in 2013-14.

Europe's top forwards are in the race, with great names such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Suárez, Robert Lewandowski all involved.

And it is Cristiano who has taken a commanding league now, after striking four times against Celta de Vigo.

Jonas Gonçalves and Gonzalo Higuaín are hard on the heels of the Portuguese forward. Both are having what is most likely their best season ever. But Ronaldo's main challenger is Luis Suárez, who scored against Eibar and has gained a foothold in the leading positions with 26 goals and 52 points.

That said, the one who has been mounting a late challenge in recent weeks is Leo Messi, que whose two goals against Eibar now take him to the tally of 21 and mean he is closing in on the leaders. Apart from the above-mentioned players, the only other one ahead of him is Robert Lewandowski.
