That was with a different club,” was Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola’s response to reminders of his unbeaten record at the Santiago Bernabéu with former club Barcelona.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid, Guardiola added: “I hope Cristiano Ronaldo is able to play."

Up for match: “I’m always happy to play a Champions League semi-final and to be in Madrid with a team like Bayern. We need to perform well and get a good result.”

Unbeaten at the Bernabéu: “That statistic was with a different team, a different club, a different situation. It has nothing to do with this tie. We’ll have to perform very well to win. Against Madrid, that’s always necessary, all the more so in a semi-final.”

Leo Messi: “I don’t feel comfortable talking about Barcelona. I’m here for a Champions League semi-final, I don’t want to cause any distractions or get distracted myself. I’m far away and I don’t know the situation. But my opinion of him could not be higher. I’ve never seen a player like him and I don’t think I ever will.”

Carlo Ancelotti and Real Madrid: “You have seen more of Madrid than me. But Madrid is always special, with this coach or with another. They will always be a strong opponent.”

Cristiano Ronaldo: “I hope he is able to play. We’re here to put on a show for the fans and they want to see the best players. And he’s one of them. If not, they have good players who bring different things to the team. They can play 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 like the final of the Copa del Rey. Isco gives you more possession. I don't know how they do it, but they sign players who run a lot. They had one before, then two and now they have four. Bale, Cristiano, Di María and Benzema. They kill you running into space. We'll try to attack and defend as we know how.”

Season: “It’s very difficult to win the Champions League. The top teams are always in there. I’m proud of my team. We won the Bundesliga in March, we’re in the final of the German Cup and in the semi-finals of the Champions League. That’s a big achievement for us. We’ve won games playing well. When we didn’t play so well, we were solid. But I was happy with the last game because we didn’t play well but we recovered our fighting mentality.”

Different feelings coming to Bernabéu with Barça and Bayern: “It’s special for the Barça fans, but I’m focused on Bayern. I always receive messages from people in Barcelona wherever I am. In terms of the differences, football in Germany is calmer between games. Here, there’s always a debate.”

Lack of patience with coaches: “New football map? There’s no new football map. At the big teams, if you lose you’re out on your ear. I have a three-year contract, and I would be out if we hadn’t won the Bundesliga, if we weren’t in the German Cup final or in the semi-finals of the Champions League.”

Are you interested in the Manchester United job following David Moyes' sacking? “I’m at Bayern, I’ve signed for three years. I feel that this team can improve. I know the style for the Spanish league, our style, and changing the culture and going to Germany isn’t easy. I need more time. I feel we can play better. In that sense I have a job to do. People are so respectful here in my job and I want to stay.”
